Oralingo: frequently asked questions

Oralingo is a messenger app with built-in translation for iPhone and Android. You write or speak in your own language, and the person you are chatting with reads it, or hears it read aloud, in theirs. Every message is translated automatically, so there is nothing to copy, paste or tap.

Yes, that is exactly what Oralingo does. Each person picks their language once, and from then on every message in every chat arrives already translated.

Oralingo translates between more than 100 languages. The app itself is available in English, Danish, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Turkish and Ukrainian.

Yes. Tap the microphone and speak. Oralingo turns what you say into text and translates it, and the other person can read it or listen to it in their own language in a natural-sounding voice. You can choose the voices you hear.

Voice mode lets you hold a conversation without touching your phone. Oralingo listens, sends your message when you pause, and reads incoming messages aloud in your language. You can set how long a pause it waits for before sending. It is made for the moments when your hands are busy.

Yes. You can make voice and video calls in Oralingo, and what each person says appears as live captions translated into the other person's language. You still hear each other's real voice; the translation is shown as text on the screen. More about call translation.

Yes. You can switch any message between the translation and the original text. That helps when a particular word matters, or when you are learning the other person's language.

Oralingo uses machine translation from Microsoft Azure. Everyday conversation translates very well. Like all machine translation it is not perfect: slang, jokes, names and very short messages can come out wrong, so check the original when something is important.

Messages are encrypted on their way between your phone and our servers, and encrypted again when they are stored. The encryption keys are kept in Microsoft Azure Key Vault. The message cache on your phone is encrypted too.

Oralingo is not end-to-end encrypted. To translate a message, read it aloud or turn speech into captions, our servers have to process its content, and messages are checked automatically for abusive content. We do not sell your data.

When you delete a chat, its messages are removed from our servers. The exception is a chat that has been reported for abuse: its content is kept until the report has been reviewed. Read the full privacy policy.

Oralingo is free to download from the App Store and Google Play, and you can start chatting for free straight away.

iPhone with iOS 15 or later, and Android phones with Android 7.0 or later.

Send them an invite link from the app. The link takes them to the App Store or Google Play, and once they have installed Oralingo and signed up, the two of you are connected. On iPhone they may be asked to enter a short invite code, which the link shows them.

No one can message you anonymously. Before a chat starts, you see the other person's profile and have to accept the connection. You can block or report anyone at any time, and reports are reviewed within 24 hours.
